Memorial Day Sale

How did we get so close to the end of May already?  Between Mother’s Day, my son’s last track meet, helping my daughter make something special to give her bridesmaids (you’ll see those after they all do) and accompanying my husband to a police academy graduation, my week zipped by so fast I barely saw it.  Since life is already in a frenzy right now, I think it’s time for a sale!

Aside from Black Friday, I don’t like to plan sales for my Etsy shop.  I prefer to just have them when the mood strikes me.  It keeps things interesting.  I’m only advertising this one to my followers, so you won’t see anything about it when you visit my shop directly.  Starting today and through Memorial Day next Monday, you can use the code MEMORIALDAY2013 to receive free shipping on any order within the United States!

In case you haven’t used a coupon code on Etsy before, it works like this:  click the green “Add to Cart” button for the item you want to order.  That will take you to a page showing the item and how you’ll pay.  On the right side of the screen, under the payment options, it says “apply shop coupon code” in blue.  Click that and a box will appear.  Type MEMORIALDAY2013 into the box, click “Apply” and your shipping should show as $0.00.

etsy button feb 2013

This includes anything in my shop, including custom items, but I have a little bonus for you.  I have about 30 items that are completed but I haven’t listed yet.  I’m going to show you what they are here, but they won’t appear in my shop until after the sale is over.  They’ll only be available to those of you who read my blog.  If there’s something here you like, just click the link above or below the photo.  It will take you to a custom listing in my shop.  In the Note to Seller, just let me know which item shown here you wanted.  Be sure to use the free shipping code on these items too!

New Fabric

I just added some new fabrics to my Etsy page today.  After the holidays deplete my stock, it’s always fun to go out shopping and see what’s new.  I don’t need much of an excuse to head to the fabric store.

I loved this camera print so much I emptied the bolt.

259

Black prints on black are always popular, so I added a couple of new ones, including one for the music lovers out there.

254255

This one reminds me spring is around the corner.

260

I found a few new basics that go with many of the prints I already have.

256

Purple, green and turquoise look so much better together than they sound like they would.

263

I love the swirliness of the waves on this blue.

267

I already had a zebra print, but this one has a completely different feel.

257

I just thought these road signs were kind of fun.

268

I ordered this from Spoonflower.  It’s not as black as I would like (which, in all fairness, they mention in their FAQ) but it’s a good charcoal print.

258

This typewriter key print is one of my favorites.  I’ve actually looked at this one several times before.

265

I also took the plunge last week and opened a little shop on Meylah.  So far it’s the same things I have on Etsy, but you might want to keep an eye on it.  I may decide to mix things up a little and add some things to Meylah that aren’t on Etsy yet!

Last, but not least, I also wanted to show you my new display mannequin.  It’s a bronze color right now, but when the weather cooperates I’m going to tape off the green leaves and spray paint the rest black.  I ordered this through Amazon, and really didn’t have high expectations for the price, but it’s solidly built and beautiful in person!

Online Customer Service

If you’re a business owner, how your customers are treated can make or break you. For me, Starbucks is almost always a gauge for how I’d like to be treated. I’m greeted in a friendly manner, I’m not made to feel like an inconvenience and the transaction ends with a thank you of some kind. If they make a mistake, they apologize and make it right. Nothing complicated or over the top, just simple courtesy.

I think sometimes we forget we should expect a certain level of customer service from our online transactions as well. Just because there’s no face-to-face doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be valued as a customer. I recently had several transactions that were excellent examples of how we should and shouldn’t be treated.

As I was writing this, I originally shared a lengthy rant on some awful customer service I received from a national craft retailer, who shall remain nameless, both in-store and online.  Instead, I’ll just say they won’t be getting any more of my business if I can help it, and move on to the positive side of my story.

There isn’t a Hobby Lobby store anywhere near me, so I’ve never shopped there before. Recently, I was searching for an item online that they happened to have the best price on. I placed the order and received it as promised. It was a simple transaction, but what impressed me was the fact that there was a card in the package that had been hand-signed by the person who had packed my order.  That’s a company who hasn’t forgotten that they’re shipping to a person.

Online Customer Service 1

I’ve ordered from Spoonflower before, but it’s been a long time.  When I placed my order last weekend, they estimated with printing time and shipping that I would have my fabric in about 10 – 12 days.  I was very happy with that.  I was delighted when my order arrived in my hands in under a week.  Again, my receipt was hand-signed and my fabric was wrapped in tissue.  I know they are a very busy, growing company but I still felt like they cared about my one little bit of fabric.  I’ll be back.

Online Customer Service 2

Another retailer I’ve never ordered from before is Pick Your Plum.  I just signed up for emails from them, so every day they send me the deal of the day.  Last week, it was baker’s twine.  I’ve been looking for a spool of red and white for a while now, and was thrilled to find it and at such a great price.  It shipped before they said it would, arrived quickly and was packaged well.  They even included a piece of candy, which having a ridiculous sweet tooth I always appreciate.

Online Customer Service 3

You’ll notice none of my examples include any giant orders, big issues that required direct communication between me and the company involved or anything else dramatic.  They were all small, simple transactions, but were fulfilled by the retailers with a certain level of care that made me happy to do business with them.  It’s what I strive for as an online retailer myself, and what I expect as a customer.  If you’re not feeling valued in your online transactions, it’s time to reevaluate where you’re spending your money.  Just like in the brick-and-mortar world, there’s always somewhere else to shop.

What Do You Want From Me?

Last year, the anniversary of my blog passed before I realized what had happened.  I celebrated anyway, but over a month late.  This year I’m actually ahead of the calendar.  The whole event is still a few weeks away, but I’m scheming right now.

One of the things I’m trying to decide is what to offer as a giveaway.  I really like to give a little something back to you, the readers who are willing to share some of your valuable time with me.  As I’ve said before, if I could I’d send a gift to every, single one of you.  However, until my husband’s lottery numbers come up, we’re looking at a random drawing.

What I’m asking from you today is just an opinion.  A quick click of a button.  If you have a great idea or a wish that isn’t listed here, please feel free to add it in that “Other” box at the bottom.  Thanks for your help!

Upcoming Holiday Sale and Giveaway

I had some plans for the weekend.  There were several holiday projects I planned to work on and write up to share with you.  However, all that changed when I arrived home from my volunteer day at the high school to find my husband standing in my kitchen.

That might not seem like a big deal, except for the fact that he’s been almost 3000 miles away at the FBI academy in Virginia.  He left on September 29th and I wasn’t supposed to see him again until December 13th, when I fly there for his graduation.  He found out he was going to have a four-day weekend, so he bought a plane ticket 3 weeks ago and kept it a surprise all this time.  I nearly fainted.  Needless to say, not much crafting got done the last couple of days.

Instead, I want to fill you in on what’s coming up in my Etsy store.  If you’re planning to place an order for Christmas, this is info you’re going to want.

014

I will be holding a Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend sale.  It will begin at midnight on Thanksgiving and end at midnight on Monday.  All of the “Ready to ship” items in my shop will be 15% off, with no coupon code required.

77135

As a little extra thanks to those of you who follow me here at my blog, on Facebook or Twitter, I will also share a discount code for an extra 5% off, which can be stacked with the sale I mentioned above and used on custom items, which aren’t otherwise on sale.  I’ll reveal that code the day before Thanksgiving, and it will be available to use during the same time frame as the sale.

Another bit of info I want to share is my shipping deadlines for Christmas delivery.  They’re coming up fast, especially for international shipping.

Last, but not least, I’ve teamed up with Sew, Mama, Sew to participate in their Handmade Holidays series.  Visit their blog on Wednesday, November 21 (the day before Thanksgiving), to enter to win a $50 gift certificate to my shop!  Don’t worry, I’ll remind you again that day so you don’t miss out!

I have to say goodbye to my husband again for another month this morning, so I’m sure you’ll understand if my sewing machine and glue gun stay cold for another day.

Friday Favorites–Crafty United States Maps

I’ve been on vacation, but I do know today isn’t Friday.  I’m changing it up a bit this week, because my topic seemed much more appropriate to share on Independence Day than after.  I’ll be back on Friday with a Disney-themed craft.

I’m doing something else a little different this week – everything here can be found on Etsy.  Once I started searching, I found so many fun takes on our fifty states (or, in most cases, the continental 48.  Sorry Alaska and Hawai’i…we still love you!) that I just decided to go with it.

Shopping

I’m a big fan of shopping online.  I love being able to sit at my computer, in my pajamas, and look for anything I might need.  Or not need.  It also makes me happy that someone will bring it to my door.

You all know I have a shop on Etsy, but they’ve come up with a few new things recently that make shopping there even better.  The big one for me is that you can now purchase from an Etsy shop without using PayPal.  You can simply use a credit card right from the cart.  Yay!

There’s also an Etsy feature I like called “Gift Ideas.”  It’s in the lower left corner of the home page, under “Ways to Shop.”  It looks at your Facebook friends’ interests and suggests related items.  Some of them are pretty good.  Some are just entertaining.  I laughed when it suggested a whole bunch of Strawberry Shortcake items for my son who likes strawberries.  But the chocolate chip cookies are spot on.

il_570xN.229886162

I just noticed you can now create a wedding registry on Etsy (upper left corner).  My wedding was almost 21 years ago, but I’m hoping other types of registries will follow.

il_570xN.278580065

This might be surprising, but I just recently placed my first order with Fabric.com.  Fabric is one thing I rarely order online, mostly because I like to be able to feel it.  But the prices were too good to pass up, and I’m very impressed with them so far.  I ordered some swatches first, which were much bigger than I expected (about 8” squares) and came very quickly.    They offer very good sales and I found the colors and descriptions to be accurate.  I’ll definitely order again.

Medium_UM-380

My most recent shopping discovery is called Tophatter.  It’s an auction website, but it’s different than any I’ve seen before.  It seems to be handmade, vintage and supplies, and from what I’ve seen so far many of the sellers are from Etsy, looking for a new outlet for their goods.  It’s fun to watch, if only for the little animated auctioneer.

Handmadeology will be hosting a Live Mother’s Day Auction on Tophatter on May 5th, which might be a good time to check it out.  It appears that Tophatter gives you a $5 credit to use toward your first purchase over $5.  I haven’t used mine yet, and it’s only good the day you register, so keep that in mind if you decide to check out the site.

Edit:  When I wrote this post, I had applied to be part of the Handmadeology Mother’s Day Auction, but didn’t know if I would be accepted – I was!  Also, I’ve been given 10 Tophatter invitations, so if you need one, email me and I’ll invite you.

Now I’ve got to give the shopping a break and get back to work.  Let me know if you try any of these out!

Friday Favorites–Dresses and Skirts

We’ve finally had a couple of really nice days around here.  We made it all the way to 70 degrees!  I painted my toenails and dug a pair of sandals out of the back of my closet.  Two days later I was stuffing them back in and slipping into my wool socks again, but it was nice while it lasted.  That little bit of sunshine, combined with my daughter’s senior prom coming up soon, has me in the mood for dresses and skirts.

I’m fascinated by the idea of these Infinity Dresses, like this one from Sew Like My Mom

infinity-wrap-dress-11

…and this one from Rostitchery.  I’m just afraid I’d end up somewhere lost in a knot.

Instructables user nataliehua made an entire Ruffled On-Shoulder Dress from one extra-large t-shirt.  It’s a teeny dress, but impressive.

T-shirt-reconstruction-DIY-Ruffled-one-shoulder-d

I don’t own one, but these yoga skirts like this one from Sew, Mama, Sew look very comfy.

MODKIDYogaSkirts1

The sash on this Simple A-Line Skirt from The Mother Huddle is removable, but it’s so cute, why would you want to?

None

I love the color of this Sweet August Dress from Kojo Designs.  So summery.

Sweet August

My favorite things about this Taking Notes Skirt from Sewing in No-Man’s Land are that extra-wide waistband and wide tie.  And the bright yellow.  And the dots.

4917909271_ffdb1d0623

I like the extra details on this Flowered Wrap Skirt from Creative Kismet, like the curved corner and the lining that would show if it flipped a little.

1434517140_9fd8001ca1_m

All the ruffles on this Ruffle Equation Skirt from iCandy Handmade are adorable, but I’m trying to figure out how I would get those boots to go with it.

I’m not sure I’m brave enough for this Party Dress from DIY Style, but it just wouldn’t be as fun any other way.

I can’t even tell you how much I love this Vintage Inspired Summer Dress from Etsy seller Darmiani Fashions.  This, with a pair of red heels, would make me blissfully happy.

In fact, let’s just go all the way with this.  These.

Here’s hoping you’ve got dress and skirt weather where you are!
